I guess this is like heart-to-hearts, but those are just cutscenes. I find it frustrating that there are so many affinity quests showing up that are nowhere close to being accessible to me yet. I do like that your location/target around enemies is clearly communicated too. Something about it doesn't feel as 'smooth' as the other XC games, but I'm enjoying it, and I like all the class, art, skill, gear, etc. I'm getting the cold sweats thinking about how much I disliked them in XC2.Ĭombat's good. I like that fall damage isn't a thing, jumping is actually quite helpful here, and hey, sprinting! Follow Ball is terrific too.

Everyone says exploration gets really good once you get Skells, but so far, I'm just on foot. :P Makes you pay closer attention to your surroundings, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't get frustrated getting killed over and over just trying to activate probes. I'm fine with doing the quests of course, but it's still a strange design decision.Įxploration is excellent, and it's kinda cool that you have to really pay attention to the way you need to 'thread the needle' through sectors in order to ensure you're not pulling aggro on enemies who are like 30-40 levels higher than you. I don't know if I've ever experienced this in a JRPG before, but when it happens, it kinda grinds things to a halt. I want to move the story forward, but instead I have to do certain things in order to even trigger it. Gating story quests behind various subquest requirements has also been a strange choice. That's not something we have to worry about these days, but the neverending disc seek/read sounds and the slowness of assets streaming in is a reminder of where we are today and why fast access to data is so important. I also forgot that this was still the generation where things weren't installed to the hard drive. More seamlessly blending all of this into a unified UI experience via a Switch remaster would be amazing. Conversely, when I want to play on just the GamePad, it's awkward and in a rare showing on the system, the text size is so small that it's even worse to play it that way. Forcing me to use the GamePad (unless I'm missing something) is so annoying, especially when there are times when I want to just play on TV.

I forgot that GamePad integration was even a thing, and man, it's pretty wild here! I mean, I guess I can appreciate having the map available at all times and having various other options easily accessible, but not being able to do some of this stuff while using a Pro Controller almost kills it for me. Definitely not getting any of the same vibes I did from the other games cast-wise. The rest of the cast so far (I'm only starting Chapter 5) seems pretty generic/forgettable. Lin's alright I guess, but Tatsu is just. was much more generic, and I was bummed that I was controlling a silent protagonist after having quite liked Shulk and Rex. I was excited to start this, but I gotta admit that things felt a bit off from the get-go. So this week, after having finished the Definitive Edition and the Future Connected epilogue, I at last dusted off and fired up Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U. The gacha system and blade designs though. I've created a couple threads here about my experience with these games. I also have a lot of respect for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, because if not for that game, I wouldn't have had the drive to go back to XC1 and finish it.

To preface this, I consider Xenoblade Chronicles 1 (and its recently release Definitive Edition on Switch) to be one of my all-time favorite JRPGs.
